Forthcoming Paper - Countdown: Europe After the American Adventure in Iraq

Paul Holman

The United States will soon withdraw the bulk of its combat forces from Iraq, perhaps beginning in the last months of the Bush presidency, and probably concluding early in the next administration. The American withdrawal from Iraq will be destabilizing at best and catastrophic at worst, not just for the Middle East but also for Europe. Even so, that damage can be minimized by frank discussion now of the threats, opportunities, and challenges facing decision makers on both sides of the Atlantic:

What are the implications of US withdrawal from Iraq for Europe and the Translatlantic relationship ? What are the prospects for Europe over the coming decade? What are the US Administration's goals for Iraq’s future, and how do these impact our relationship with European countries ? How has the Iraq War transformed Transatlantic relations for the long and medium term? Which aspects of the relationship are repairable ? Which are the EU’s key strategic interests, main assets and instruments?
