Conference Program: HTML version | Word file
The pace of change in the world has accelerated dramatically in recent years, unleashing forces affecting the social, cultural and political lives of people everywhere. The rapid globalization of production and trade, the cybernetic revolution, the growth of transnational corporations, and the increasing role of international economic institutions such as the WTO, IMF, and World Bank – all these and others have had extraordinary impacts on most countries, and have also changed relations among nations. Such phenomena have occurred more or less continually throughout the course of history, but it is important to understand the specific features of the transformations now taking place and their implications. What exactly are these impacts? How are people responding to them? How does international economics impact on nation-state differences? Can democratic politics successfully manage contemporary economic change? Is it possible for countries with different geopolitical and resource interests to build peaceful, sustainable economic partnerships in the era of globalization? In a world of complex globalization challenges, how do we design appropriately complex global governance responses?
The potential range of implications is quite wide and diverse. The International conference Globalization in the 21st Century: How Interconnected is the World? has been planned to encompass as many of these as possible. Each panel is interdisciplinary in scope, with panel members representing the fields of international relations, political science, economics, sociology, cultural anthropology, and law. Panelists include scholars of globalization and experts from around the world.
This conference will launch a new collaborative research relationship between the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies & Research and the William S. Cohen Center for International Policy and Commerce.
